Prevailing Prayer

While rereading A.T. Pierson’s book “George Muller: All Things are Possible.” I stumbled upon this great section on prevailing prayer.

Five grand conditions of prevailing prayer were ever before his [George Muller’s] mind:

1. Entire dependence upon the merits and meditation of the Lord Jesus Christ, as the only ground of any claim for blessing. (See John xiv. 13,14; xv. 16, etc.)

2. Separation from all known sin… (Psalm lxvi. 18)

3. Faith in God’s word of promise as confirmed by His oath. Not to believe Him is to make Him both a liar and perjurer. (Hebrews xi. 6; vi. 13-20)

4. Asking in accordance with His will. Our motives must be godly: we must not seek any gift of God to consume it upon our own lusts. (1 John v. 13; James iv. 3)

5. Importunity in supplication. There must be waiting on God and waiting for God, as the husbandman has long patience to wait for the harvest. ( James v. 7; Luke xviii. 1-10)

Strategic Prayer Update

It is great to be back in Scotland with my family after being away for the past two weeks.  Even though I hate being away, I enjoyed my brief time in the U.S. for Scott and Monica’s wedding in Portland.  Scott is a great friend from Scotland who helped start the church here, went to Multnomah seminary and met his bride while studying in Portland.  The second week found me almost two hours outside of Budapest, Hungary for a missionary conference (think central Kansas, but rural.)  I had a chance to teach a workshop for a couple days and the response from it was quite… surprising.  I thought the material was simple, but the range of opinions brought about a thought provoking time for all of us.

These past two days I have been reacquainting myself with what is happening with our building situation.  It seems our building has not yet been surveyed and valued as it was supposed to be while I was away.  The surveyor was hospitalized last week, but has rescheduled the survey and valuation for Thursday, August 13th.  SO MUCH hinges on this survey.  It will tell us the value of the building, the condition of the building, expected repairs in the first 5 years…things like that.

Since we have been without a church building, we have been meeting in the ally next to our old church building for our regular prayer.  It has rained every Tuesday I have been in town for about a month and a half.  And yet there we were last night asking God to intervene.  Asking for a low valuation.

praying.jpg

It is hard to value a church building and even professionals are not quite sure what the value is going to be. What this survey declares the value to be, this will be the official value of the building.  We are praying for a LOW VALUE.

In the next 10 days, we are wanting to make an offer.  This is a huge moment for us.  Pray all the details come together and that, against all human expectation, the owners of the building sell it to us quickly.  (I plan to write more about this next time.)

Strategic Prayer Point:  Low Valuation Of The Church Building On Thursday August 13th.

We believe in a God who still hears prayers and still intervenes.  I am secretly praying that somehow we will be able to worship in the building by Sunday, September 20th.  We have nowhere to meet from that weekend on.  Join with us in making a loud cry to heaven for a miracle in our situation.  Thank you for praying.

Joyfully Overwhelmed

Something has happened which cannot be explained other than God’s answering of many prayers. This summer I began to pray for opportunities to speak at 6 different universities in Scotland this year. God is answering this prayer differently and yet more obviously than I could have ever imagined.

In all my time in Scotland I have only been invited to speak at one university ever, the University of Glasgow’s Christian Union, which would seem to be the most likely since we are located right next to this university. All that to say in just over 5 years I have had only 1 invite, so to ask God for 6 this year seemed quite a big ask.

In the last 30 days I have received 4 invitations from different Universities in the area.

Tonight I am speaking at the first, tomorrow, the second, next tuesday the third, and I just received my fourth invitation this morning for three weeks from now. How amazing!

I say I am joyfully overwhelmed because it is one thing to pray for opportunities, it is quite another to prepare and speak. Pray with me that the same God who opened these amazing opportunities will powerfully challenge and convict and encourage the people I speak to, and also strengthen me in all ways for the incredible task at hand.

Please join me in joy and join me in prayer. Our God is great!

Prayer walking

Most days I spend time walking around the University of Glasgow praying, essentially, for revelation. For God to reveal himself, to open eyes so many may see, ears, so that many may hear and believe in Jesus Christ.

I was thinking about Dan Ward this week, how he as a student at the university, a die hard atheist was sitting in an evolution lecture when all the sudden God revealed himself to him and he looked for a church and gave his life to Jesus.

God does this…

Father, may you open many hearts and minds to see you and desire to dedicate their lives to you, coming to faith through Jesus Christ!

Nightmares…

running late pic.gif

I have two recurring nightmares that pop up from time to time, both of them I find quite ironic. One of my reoccurring nightmares has to do with public speaking. Usually I find myself, the day of a message having not yet prepared. Sometimes it is a Sunday message but more often it is a one-off event like a wedding, funeral, or speaking at a different group. The second of my reoccurring nightmares deals with missing an airline flight, either showing up with out my passport or being delayed in some unusual way. These nightmares seem ironic because God has appointed me to be an international missionary church planter.

Public Speaking.gif

For the last month or more I have been plagued with an unusual amount of nightmares in these two themes. I would ask you to pray for me as I continue teaching and for spiritual protection for my family as we prepare to fly out to the states for a few weeks this summer.

I am asking for prayer because the only explanation I have for our family’s unusual health, and safety is the diligent prayer cover we have received from people around the world. Thank you for interceding on my/our behalf.

PS. Feel free to pray other prayers for us as well:-)

My Prayers These Days…

Photo 15.jpg

These are some of the things I have been praying about these days.

  • Thankful. After 5 years living in Scotland and praying over the University of Glasgow I was finally invited to speak at the Christian Union. It was a great honour to be asked to speak and God seems to really have blessed the time.
  • Thankful. On Sunday our church had a feast. This time we also had an “open mic” for musicians and singers to play. Wade cooked up some fantastic food. Leah, Aimee, and Lesley pulled it off amazingly. (Stephen’s Blog Post)
  • feast2.jpg

  • Fruit. God seems to have used the feast to intrigue people about Church and about Jesus. I am praying that God continues and nurtures this “interest” so that these people give their lives to him.
  • feast1.jpg

  • Thankful. It has almost been 1 year since we have been back in our building. We do not own it yet, but in the mean time God has been so good to us. We perpetually live with the understanding we could be kicked out with the shortest of notice and yet one year later God still allows us to meet here. I do pray that we will be able to buy the building soon, but I am also thankful for this time of cheep rent.
  • Re:Awakening. Next February begins the Re:Awakening conference; a conference targeting the Student population in Scotland. I have been invited to speak at it which completely lines up with my heart but I have been asking God, “Do You want me to speak?” and if so, “Will You powerfully move?” www.re-awakening.org.uk (site not completely ready yet)
  • mainimg4.png

  • Revival and Awakening. One consistent message from our time in London two weeks ago was how Scotland is decades behind spiritually.  D.L. Moody in the late 1800’s was preaching and seeing a massive revival 1/4 of a mile from our church. For a while Scotland burned bright for God, but then generations grew up who knew nothing about what God did in the revival and who chose to reject God. I am praying for something I have never seen; a real reviving and awakening of the emerging generations here in Scotland. I invite you to join with me in praying for this until it happens.

God still hears prayers. God is still moving. I am so thankful for all of you who join with me in interceding for us and for Scotland.

Quick Prayer Request

This weekend I am speaking at out church retreat.  I would really appreciate prayer both as I continue to prepare and for a significant weekend for our church.

Thank you to all those who pray…

The Wonderful Crisis (A Long Praise)

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008

Sunday morning about 2 hours before church was to start on the 6th of January, in the cold Scottish winter, our temporary heater stopped working. The building’s heating system had been vandalized over a year ago and the estimated fixing costs were between £15,000-30,000 (30,000-60,000US) from a heating expert we paid to look over the damage. The owners of our building said they were not going to fix it and we would have to make do, and so we gave up on the old system until we could purchase the building.

This autumn, Tim Shirley got us a great deal on a jet engine looking burner, which took a bit of the edge off. By November our jet engine was not quite getting the job done and so thanks to a generous gift we were able to have 4 radiant heaters installed. We would not have been able to make through the cold of November and December with out the combination of the two heating systems. But last Sunday the jet engine died, and I watched our people (whom I affectionately refer to as “the frozen chosen”) shiver and attempt to sing, but the cold was too much for most.

By God’s hidden hand of providence, and without warning, the current building owners sent some men over to the church and they repaired the vandalized chimney system. This gave Wade Thompson the inspiration to call together a work day to reassess the buildings boiler system and see what needed to happen in order to get it fixed. We assessed 6 things that needed to happen.

  1. The Chimney system was completely blocked from the vandals. Although the owners fixed the damage, they didn’t clear out the debris… inside were broom handles, huge bricks, and it was clogged tight with dirt and garbage.
  2. The radiator system needed to be cleaned out and refilled with water.
  3. The door on the boiler room needed to be fully rebuilt and reinforced.
  4. The Gas needed to be turned back on.
  5. We needed to get power to all the equipment.
  6. We needed to get all the ancient equipment to run after not operating since October 1st 2006 (our last day in the building before we had to move out… they day I shut it down.)

We are just a bunch of missionaries, without much money, and without some of these professional skills, and so we prayed. We prayed for the wisdom to understand what was normally out with our understanding. We prayed for God’s aid. We needed a miracle.

Nobody worked harder than Wade Thompson, he called people together and he lead the charge back into the boiler room, and single handedly took on the dirtiest and most difficult task of getting in that chimney and clearing it all out. I remember after several trips to the hardware store and hours and hours of work finally hearing him celebrate from the chimney “I see day light!” With those words we all gained hope that we just might be able to get this system working again.

Andy Ashworth was there every moment rebuilding the door and the door jam which had been completely destroyed by the vandals. He had help the first day with Mike Libolt and on the second with Guy Taylor. Those guys had to fight through obstacle after obstacle but finally we got the door fitted and fixed.

After several phone calls and testing many points throughout the system we discovered that the radiator system was not drained and instead still had the chemicals preserving the pipes from rusting and needing to be refilled, saving us a couple thousand dollars. Again good news raising our hopes for the impossible… working heat for our building for Sunday.

Stephen Irwin, among other things, got the gas up and running for us as well as continually getting us quotes from professional contractors for the water and electrical system.

DSC00250.JPG

Speaking of the Electrical system, we discovered some major obstacles with the wiring. When some previous electrical work was done, the wires for the boiler pumps caught on fire and were cut. Quoted repair costs £668 plus tax, without any guarantee that anything would run after their work. We had until the end of the night to decide if we needed them or not. To make a long… very long story short. We kept discovering things were not as bad as we thought they were… and late last night got power to everything that needed power. I remember the moment Wade and Andy and I were in the boiler room looking at old switches from the 30’s or something. The power should be working but nothing was on, and then Wade flipped some random switch that shouldn’t have done anything and the pumps whirled to life!!! We all jumped like 3 feet, then stared at each other and started celebrating.

DSC00249.JPG

So then we flipped the switch to turn on the boilers… the fan clicked on… we had wide eyes as we looked at each other waiting for the flame to come on… It didn’t happen. What? It should be working… We tried it again… fan…off. We stood there for a few minutes thinking what else could possibly need to be done. Occasionally we would push the button again simply because we had no other ideas. And then one time, the fan didn’t shut off and we looked inside the ancient boiler and saw a tiny flame which grew and grew and grew until it blazed. We laughed, we cheered, we took pictures, we thanked God. I have been walking around on cloud 9 ever since 11 last night.

This was God giving us insights. This was God’s people’s generosity from the other side of the world coming at the right time. I want to say a special thank you to the generosity of God’s people at Christ’s Church in Federal Way, Washington, and at the 3rd Christian Reformed Church in Lynden, Washington, who gave sacrificially and generously towards our heating crisis. Thank you. I also want to thank God for the team of missionaries whom God has brought together here in Glasgow. This was true Synergy with our team doing together that which exceeded the sum total of our talents and abilities. Thank you for all your hard work.

The fire still burns!!! There will be heat for Sunday!!! God is glorious and I am completely wowed by his sovereign hand at work globally to bring us to this point the very week our temporary heating system died.

God you are amazing! You have done great things for us, and we are filled with joy and awe! Thank you.

Milestone

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

111.jpg

This past Sunday was a big milestone for our church. It was our first time to break the 100 person barrier. The exact number was one hundred eleven.

These last couple years have seen daunting obstacles and significant milestones. They have seen times of incredible discouragement, and times of amazement at what God was doing as he called us into existence.

I am convinced that the single most determining factor of our obvious headway (especially these past 25 months) in comparison to so many others facing defeat is the hundreds of people in Scotland and across the world praying our little church into existence. I am also convinced that if that prayer cover were removed we would be swamped by a flood of darkness currently held off by God in answer to your prayers.

Join with us in giving thanks to God who has proven over and over that He still hears prayers and that He is still moving.

The Fast

fasting.jpg

Tonight begins our churches 24 hour fast. We are fasting and praying specifically over the remaining obstacles to purchasing this building. Yesterday we received confirmation that the owners are attempting to have our church building turned into flats (cause of delay). It is in the government’s hands. I think it unlikely that this will be approved but it is worth a million pounds ($2m USD) to them if it does get approved.

Join us in prayer that this will be rejected quickly, so that we can purchase this building before winter sets in. I am praying that we will own this building by December 31st.

Pray that we will have spiritual confirmation this week about our path forward. If you pray and hear something (or wonder if you might have), please send me an email (brian (at) rehope.co.uk).

Thank you for interceding!
